Furniture Assembly Tips: The Overlooked Details Experts Know
Dieser Post ist von 11. Feb 2016 by Livarea.
Germans are not only the reigning football champions, but also the world champions of home furnishing. No other nation spends more money on furniture. The average German citizen invests almost 400 Euros per year on a new piece or two for their home. Another statistic – taken from the Association of the German Furniture Industry – states that on average, people visit a furniture store or order online every five years to spruce up their home a little. Those who always opt for high-quality products when buying furniture benefit not only from their durability but also from simplified furniture assembly, for which we will give you valuable tips below!
The furniture has arrived – what now?
If your new furniture arrives packaged, you should immediately check the packaging for any external damage. If you find serious defects during your check, demand to open the boxes in the presence of the delivery person. After all, in such a case, there is a reasonable suspicion of damaged furniture. Alternatively, note 'Accepted with reservation – packaging heavily damaged' on the receipt to be signed.
Unpack the furniture immediately and inspect it carefully. The latter also applies, of course, if the items arrive unpackaged. If there is external damage, it is best to report it immediately. Don't forget to take clear photos of the damaged areas. If the delivery person is still present, you can also refuse acceptance directly, and the furniture will be returned to the seller immediately.
Some damage – such as a wardrobe door that doesn't close – only becomes visible after furniture assembly. As soon as you discover such faults, you must report them to avoid losing your right to return or exchange. To prevent you from damaging the furniture during assembly, we provide plenty of valuable tips in advance.

For furniture assembly, you will need:
- a hammer, to gently tap wooden dowels into the pre-drilled holes
- possibly wood glue for better fastening of the wooden dowels
- screwdrivers in various sizes and with different head shapes – flathead and Phillips
- several – different sized – Allen keys
- a spirit level, which is the most important tool for furniture assembly, as it determines whether your assembled furniture pieces stand straight or not
Extra Tip 1: For assembling larger furniture, get an additional person, as certain tasks require four hands.
Extra Tip 2: If you need to fasten several screws at once, first screw them all in loosely, check that they are well seated, and then tighten them. This way, you prevent the respective piece of furniture from warping due to uneven tension.

You already know that you should use a spirit level to align your new furniture. Also, pay attention to the correct gap dimensions – for example, between two stacked drawers. By the way: Be sure to avoid the drawers rubbing, otherwise you might ruin your elegant piece of furniture.
Incidentally: With high-quality designer furniture there are several adjustment options. This functional advantage is usually missing in cheaper versions.
Conclusion
If all delivered furniture pieces pass your damage inspection, then it's time for furniture assembly. To avoid making serious mistakes during this (e.g., by damaging the cabinet yourself during assembly), you need the right tools – especially screwdrivers with various head types and a spirit level for correctly aligning the furniture. If you then observe and follow our practical tips, nothing can really go wrong when assembling your new furnishings. Especially if you have opted for quality models made from first-class materials, which can be moved more often, are generally more stable and are often already pre-assembled!
